Mary Beth brings more than 30 years of environmental and public health expertise to the board having worked in both fields during that time. Currently, she is the River Relay Program Manager for the East Coast Greenway Alliance, a national non-profit organization based in Durham, NC. The Alliance promotes the development and use of a 3,000-mile greenway running through 15 states from Maine to Florida.

Previously, she served as a Senior Project Officer and Deputy Director at Active Living By Design (ALBD), a national non-profit organization promoting healthy communities located in Chapel Hill, NC. She served as the first Director of North Carolina’s statewide recycling program for the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (1990 – 1996) and was chosen by the NC Recycling Association as their “Recycler of the Year” in 1993. As the Associate Director of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Center for Urban & Regional Studies (1996 – 2005), her work focused on growth management issues which lead to a gubernatorial appointment (Hunt administration) to the State of North Carolina Infrastructure Council from 2000 – 2003. Following her master’s degree completion at UNC’s School of Global Public Health, she worked as a Community Outreach Coordinator for the Environmental Resource Program and as an Environmental Management Research Associate at UNC’s Institute for Environmental Studies (1985 – 1990). Originally from West Virginia, she received a Bachelor of Science degree from West Virginia University. Having lived in North Carolina since 1979, she is now a devoted Tar Heel fan and lives in Chapel Hill, NC with her husband, Bill Rote. Mary Beth has been involved with both NCLCV and NCLCVF since 1984.
