Fayetteville Community Garden Day: Growing Community Through Gardening

On Saturday, September 16, 2023, PowerUp NC hosted the first Fayetteville Community Garden Day at Second Missionary Baptist Church. As climate change intensifies, food will be harder and harder to grow, thus increasing the price of food. Community gardens not only provide important nutrients to communities, but they serve as a gathering place, where young and old learn from each other.

Yes, fruit, vegetables, and flowers grow–but so does the community. We proudly support to the Fayetteville Community Garden.

To celebrate this day every year, Mayor Mitch Covin signed the proclamation, and former City Council member for District 2, Shekeyla Ingram, presented the proclamation. She said, “engaging the community in organized efforts to promote environmental sustainability is very important for our wellness and the environment.” She grew up in the Old Wilmington road community, and expressed her pleasure in presenting this great accomplishment to the community.

In addition to the proclamation, we orchestrated a short, inspirational program. The program included a hymn from the church choir, the proclamation, the opportunity to plant flowers, and lunch.

We thank all the Old Wilmington road community, alongside Fayetteville residents from other surrounding communities. We couldn’t have done this without you. Special thanks to Mr. Leslie McCoy. Mr. McCoy serves as one of the main garden keepers of the garden–picking seeds, watering the soil, and maintaining the safety of the garden. We all benefit from his dedication to the community.

Get Involved

There is a lot that goes into the upkeep of a garden. Before the ceremony, we prepared the plot for community members so they could easily participate. But we will need the generosity of others to continue to make this a productive community garden. You can dedicate your time by signing up here! Or we ask that you become a recurring donor to help us on all our projects.
