Medicaid Expansion is Environmental Justice

There is a direct connection between environmental justice and closing the health insurance coverage gap. Low-income communities and communities of color have disproportionately taken the brunt of environmental pollution. They are also disproportionately less likely to have access to healthcare.

Access to affordable, quality healthcare is critical for identifying early warning signs of illnesses such as those caused or exacerbated by environmental factors, and ensuring patients get the treatments they need.

Covid-19 has exposed the inadequacies of our society and economy. All across North Carolina, we’re seeing our families, friends, and neighbors go without proper healthcare, jobs, and sufficient unemployment benefits. North Carolina is one of only 12 states that has not expanded Medicaid, even though 90% of the costs would be covered by our federal tax dollars. More than 400,000 North Carolinians would benefit.
