Corey J. Simpson was born and raised in Winston-Salem, currently resides in Charlotte, NC. He has a background in civil engineering, however has shifted to focusing on real estate development. Corey became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated and while earning his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. He later completed the Real Estate Development Certificate Program through Cornell University. His work as a civil engineering consultant and project manager has given him firsthand insight into the intersection of policy, development, and community impact. He has played a pivotal role in large-scale development projects, including the transformation of underutilized spaces into vibrant, mixed-use communities. Beyond his professional achievements, Corey loves being a father, being with his family, tasting wines, sneakers, and traveling abroad. His passion for housing, infrastructure, economic development, and sustainability stems from personal and professional experiences—ranging from growing up in a multigenerational working-class household to later navigating the industry as both an engineer and emerging developer. His extensive travels abroad have further shaped his outlook, exposing him to diverse cultures, environments, and urban landscapes. By experiencing how different cities approach infrastructure, housing, and public policy, Corey has gained a global perspective on urban development, sustainability, and the importance of forward-thinking city planning. As a Boards and Commissions Fellow, Corey seeks to be a conduit for impactful change. Inspired by his grandmother, Delores Simpson’s entrepreneurial spirit and legacy of service & community, he is committed to bridging the gap between policy, development, and community needs, advocating for accessible housing, resource equity, and innovative urban planning solutions.
